The DDL Wizard Application

The DDL Wizard Application

The DDL Wizard software is designed to extract the DDL an Oracle export file and write it out to disk as a series of executable creation scripts. It offers the ability to apply rules to manipulate the DDL (change tablespace names, adjust storage clauses etc.) prior to saving the DDL in script form which can save on a lot of manual updates. An additional feature changes the output to a linked HTML tree. This gives the DDL Wizard the ability to provide easily accessible documentation of the database DDL structure.

The DDL Wizard presents its global functions (loading, saving, exiting etc.) as a column of buttons in the right hand side of the application window. The tabs on the top left are used to provide areas of major functionality where the currently loaded Oracle export file and object rules can be viewed and manipulated. Along the bottom of the window are three status line areas where DDL Wizard provides information about its current state.

The Global Functions

  • The Wizard Logo Button
The Wizard Logo button brings up an About dialog box which provides information on the DDL Wizard version and contact information.
  • Read Export File
The Read Export File button loads an Oracle export file into the DDL Wizard. The export file must be generated with the ROWS=N option - the DDL Wizard cannot read an export file which contains data rows. Once an export file has been loaded, the panels on the Schemas & Objects tab will automatically update to show the DDL contents. The DDL Wizard never writes to or modifies the export file in any way.
  • Clear Export File
This button clears the currently loaded export file from the DDL Wizard. Any rules that have been created or loaded will remain in place (see the help for the Object Rules Tab).
  • Load Rules from File
The Load Rules from File button reads a previously saved list of object rules and configures the DDL Wizard to use them. Rules are visible on the Object Rules Tab. Please see the specific Object Rules Tab page for more detailed information.
  • Clear All Rules
The Clear All Rules button clears the currently operational set of rules from the DDL Wizard. If the rules have unsaved changes the option of discarding or saving the rules will be offered. The currently loaded export file will remain unaffected.
  • Save Rules to File
The Save Rules to File button writes the current set of rules out to a disk file.
  • Save Rules As
This button performs the same function as the Save Rules to File button but always prompts for a filename before saving.
  • Save "Selected State"
The various DDL objects in the display can be selected for output by checking or unchecking the boxes beside the name of the object. If you wish, you can preserve the "Selected" state for restoration at a later time. The Save Selected State button writes the names and current state (checked or unchecked) out to a file.
  • Save "Selected State" As
This button performs the same function as the Save Selected State button but always prompts for a filename before saving.
  • Load "Selected State"
The Load Selected State button reads a previously saved list of DDL object names and their selected states (checked or unchecked) and configures the objects appropriately in the DDL Wizard.
  • The Tabs
  • Schemas & Objects
The Schemas & Objects Tab provides an interface to view the schema and object DDL contained in an Oracle export file. Please see the specific help page for the Schemas & Objects Tab for detailed information.
  • Object Rules
This Object Rules Tab displays the object rules currently in operation in the DDL Wizard. Please see the specific Object Rules Tab page for detailed information on this topic.
  • Misc. Setup
This Tab contains a few configuration items (such as locations of output directories and log files). Please see the specific Misc. Setup Tab page for more detailed information.
